
Why openCAVE?
Satellite venting is a critical part of spacecraft design and launch analysis. As the launcher depressurizes during ascent, pressure differences can develop between spacecraft compartments and generate loads on the structure, MLI and internal units.
openCAVE provides a fast and intuitive open-source solution for satellite venting analysis. It predicts pressure evolution and pressure differences between spacecraft cavities, helps determine the required venting area, and supports both continuum and free molecular regimes.


What is satellite Venting modelling?
During launch, the pressure surrounding a satellite rapidly decreases. Gas trapped inside the spacecraft must escape through dedicated venting paths while keeping pressure differences within acceptable limits.
Venting modelling covers two main regimes. During the continuum regime, it predicts pressure evolution and differential pressures during launcher depressurization. At lower pressures, the free molecular regime accounts for residual gas and outgassing until orbit, helping assess when pressure levels become sufficiently low to prevent effects such as corona discharge.
Is openCAVE validated?
Yes. openCAVE has been validated against venting experiments and benchmarked against both 1D engineering models and 3D CFD simulations. Continuum predictions have been compared with detailed OpenFOAM CFD cases and existing industrial venting models, while free molecular modelling has been assessed using experimental and TVAC data.
These comparisons provide confidence in the use of openCAVE for engineering venting assessments. More detailed validation results and methodology are available through dedicated training sessions.

Where can I download openCAVE?
openCAVE can be downloaded free of charge, including its source code, under the GNU GPL v3.0 license. A user manual is included in the download package.
Is it really free?
Yes! openCAVE follows the same open-source philosophy as openPlume. The tool is distributed under the GNU GPL v3.0 license, with its source code available to all users.
